Objectives

The SENSONCRETE 3D project is based on the comprehensive design of a new construction philosophy combining both 3D printing technology and smart concrete oriented to structural applications. For this purpose, SENSOCRETE 3D is aimed at designing and constructing a 3D printer for precast building components (ie., panels for building envelopes) made of a sensorized cement-based material capable of monitoring environmental variables and degree of damage of the material itself.

The use of 3D printing systems has proven to improve the productivity and the efficiency of the construction industry. Likewise, sensorized concrete elements with self-sensing abilities will enable the possibility of detecting variations in temperature, humidity, strains and even detect damages in concrete infrastructures. These data provide valuable information about the conditions of the structures, allowing to monitor in real-time their state and make decisions that will lead to improving structural safety and reliability as well as energy efficiency during the service life of the building.

A consortium created by UPC, CIM and ESCOFET will undertake this pioneering project. The outcomes of this project will have positive impacts on economic, environmental and social indicators and, hence, on the sustainability of building construction and management.
